Henry Rollins interview

I spoke with Henry Rollins the other day. It was a phone interview to preview an upcoming Spoken Word tour date in Charlotte.

The interview was scheduled for 20 to 25 minutes, but the publicist told me that if Henry was his usual talkative self, to roll with it. I was apparently the last interview of the day.

Well, it was one of the finer interviews I've done. Fascinating and informative.

When I interviewed Alice Cooper a few years ago, a 15-minute interview went on for 45 minutes. I asked everything I could - about The Muppet Show, his golf game - until I finally ran out of questions.

With Rollins, I had tons more that I could have asked. I didn't get into acting. I didn't get into his tattoos. I didn't get into his lyrics as much as I would have liked. I didn't get into his writing.

The interview focused a lot on his travels, his spoken word and where he is in the present day as far as music is concerned. The full 7,500 word interview will be posted on charlotte.creativeloafing.com next week.

Hopefully, I'll get another chance to talk with him. Until then...

Appparently, Puddle of Mudd singer Wes Scantlin wasn't too happy with the crowd at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Saturday, Aug. 25.

The singer, whose band was opening for Nickelback, chided the crowd after their first song to stand up. "I thought this was a rock show!"

After the second song didn't induce much action, the singer promptly turned around and dropped trou.

Concert crazy

It's been a crazy last few weeks...

I had a photo pass for John Mayer - who impressed me with his guitar playing, and continues to make some of the funniest faces in music.

I had tickets and a photo pass for Sugarland and Kenny Chesney. Sugarland was great and should be headlining soon. Chesney knows how to put on a show. I wasn't that into his music, but he's definitely an entertainer.

Nickel Creek with Fiona Apple was another great show. I definitely want to check out more NC albums after it.

Projekt Revolution took place on a 100-plus degree day. My Chemical Romance puts on a helluva show, as well. Linkin Park was solid. Taking Back Sunday was heavy on energy and emotion.

JJ Grey impressed me with his Cajun blues... I'm still not very impressed with the Drive By Truckers, but the Allmans tore it up. Derek Trucks has to be the near the top of the list for best living guitar players. He's effortless and incredible to watch.

According to Web site PerezHilton.com, No Doubt has been practicing in preparation for their next album.

Those who attended the Gwen Stefani show in California were treated to an encore of three No Doubt songs - with the full band!

Let's hope this is a return to the No Doubt of old and a step away from Gwen's not-so-hot solo work.

Smashing Pumpkins hate their fans?

OK, I've complained many times about artists screwing over their fans - they release an album, and then shortly thereafter, release it again with bonus tracks.

So, their true fans have to buy it twice.

Now, Smashing Pumpkins is one-upping the ante. Instead of releasing a bonus CD later, they're going to do it all at once.

Here's the problem - they're going to release one bonus track on the Best Buy album, one on the Target album and one on iTunes. Other record stores get no bonus tracks.

Want all three? You have to buy the album three times. Like supporting local indie record stores? Then you get none.

That's ridiculous! I'm not the only one who agrees...

Idol finale

The "American Idol" finale was last night as Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis sang their way through two karaoke tunes and a sappy first single.

The single's ballad form favored Jordin. While, as Simon put it, Blake was clearly the better performer.

So, who should win? I don't think it matters aside from the paycheck.

Chris Daughtry came out last night and showed you don't have to win to hit it big.

Jordin's the better singer, but Blake brought something different to the competition and kept people entertained.

As I sit back and wonder why the finale is two hours long, I'll have my TV safely tuned in....to....Lost over on ABC.

I'm sure someone will tell me who won when it's over.

Summer anthem or horrible song?

Apparently, all you need is a catchy rhythm and some stupid lyrics to be a hit.

They're saying that Lil Mama's song "Lip Gloss" is going to be the hit of the summer.

To this, I say, are you freakin' kidding me?

The state of the music industry must be hurting.

This is not the way to sell albums. How about putting out music that will still be relevant in 10 years let alone 10 days.

I can't say I predicted Melinda would be the one going home, but I did have my hopes that it would be the case.

So, it's down to Jordin and Blake - the better singer vs. the more contemporary personality. I think both of them have good possibilities for a strong career.

Bo Diddley suffers stroke

Sad news... Bo Diddley, 78, suffered a stroke and is in intensive care.

Tests have indicated that his speech and speech recognition have been affected.

Sad, sad news for the rock and roll legend. I once had the honor of a 10 minute phone interview with him... I can only wish him a quick and complete recovery.

Idol's top 3

The karaoke contest is almost over...

Last night, each of the final three contestants sang three songs and it's just about anybody's guess who will be in the final two.

While popular opinion says Melinda will win it all, I'm hoping she's the one to go home tonight.

Jordin has the most fun, relaxed and powerful voice of the group. She's also the most marketable.

Blake, while not the best singer, definitely has the most contemporary abilities. Sure, the beatboxing gets old, but it's better than hearing the same ballads over and over.

Melinda is a good singer, but she doesn't stand out. It's solid vocals, but no personality. Any album she were to make would disappear...and not in a good way.

I think Blake has the best chance at mass appeal, Jordin is a question mark, but could turn out like Kelly Clarkson. Melinda will be placed alongside Ruben or Fantasia as winners that were never heard from again.

American Idol - Final 4

So, we're down to four contestants on the country's biggest karaoke contest and they went with the Bee Gees...

Ugh, there are so many things I don't like about this show.

Anyway, I've grown tired of Melinda's ballads, Lakisha's screaming and Blake's beatboxing.

This is Jordin's chance to win it. If she gets voted out - most likely because people assume she's safe - it's pointless to pay attention to who wins.

I think Melinda and Lakisha would disappear into the Fantasia, Ruben and Taylor world of former Idol winners.

Melinda is too dime-a-dozen. There are plenty of good singers, but she's missing the "Wow" factor. I've also seen the spit fly out of her mouth too many times for her to be visually appealing.

Lakisha looks like she'd putting a hurtin' on me if I say something bad, but I've said it since week one - she screams. Like Jennifer Hudson before her, she needs to tone it down a notch and relax. We can hear you just fine - it's called a microphone. It's also that lisp and strange way her mouth curls up for the letter 's' that ruins any appeal the singer might have.

Blake can beatbox, we get it. I didn't think his songs last night sounded bad, but sometimes there can be too much of a good thing. I thought he changed it up nicely with the falsetto - probably the first time it hasn't made me cringe on this show.

Jordin - she's got style, poise, presense, beauty and a naturally gifted voice. She's young and would probably put out a better, hipper album than Melinda or Lakisha.

I'm guessing that tonight, Lakisha is gone.

Karaoke and lip synching

The world's most popular karaoke contest continued last night as the top six left sang Bon Jovi hits on "American Idol."

Phil actually got things off to a good start, and then I was more surprised by watching Jordin struggle.

Blake modernized a classic and showed why he should win, while Fantasia, oops, I mean LaKisha, and Fantasia, oops, I mean Melinda, had their own problems. I thought LaKisha continues to scream and Melinda's R&B style didn't fit the song.

Chris put an r&b style on "Dead or Alive" and it was painful to listen to - especially after hearing Chris Daughtry tear it up.

I'd boot off Chris and Lakisha.

In Synch

While most people watched "Idol," a few in California had their eyes on the brief return of Britney Spears.

Who are the idiots who payed $125 to see the pop tart lip synch five songs? This girl should never be labeled as a singer. She's an entertainer...that's about it.

Did Prince publicly humiliate wannabe pop princess Paris Hilton on purpose?

A source tells Us Weekly that Hilton, 26, was in the audience at the Purple One’s April 20 Club 3121 gig at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in las Vegas when he invited the "Stars Are Blind" singer to join him.

As a “delighted” Hilton obliged, Prince, 48, handed her the mic and told the audience, “Let’s see if she can really sing,” says the witness.

Hilton stormed offstage – and left the club two songs later.

Prince’s rep had no comment. Hilton’s rep says, “The item is false.”

It's great that "American Idol" tried to find a worthy cause...

But why is it that the poor people are asked to help feed other poor people? If "Idol" took all of the money they earned from advertising during that two-hour special last night, I'm sure it would be much more than $30 million.

At least Ellen donated $100,000...but should celebrities that make $20 million on a movie be asked to donate a little more than $100,000?

I appreciate the effort, Ellen, but you could have upped the stakes a little.

I've grown bored of saying the same thing every week - Jordin is the best female singer and Blake has the best chance for the guys thanks to solid vocals and good personalities.

It really doesn't matter who else they wanted to boot, though I'd guess Lakisha will be finding the door soon.

Like Jennifer Hudson before her, she screams more than sings.

Everything is Energy

I caught Everything is Energy last night at the Visulite Theatre.

The band is the latest project from Chris Shinn who once helmed Unified Theory with some of the Blind Melon and Pearl Jam guys.

The new band has a lot of promise, though only about 50 people were there to witness it last night.

American Idol - Top 7

I knew it would be an interesting week for "American Idol," given the country theme, but most singers actually did ok with it.

As I've said in the past, I'd give the top two to Blake and Jordin. Blake may not be the best singer, but he breaks up the monotony and tries to bring something fresh to the table.

Jordin simply has an outstanding voice and fun personality. Where Melinda is boring and LaKisha looks like she'd hurt you if you don't vote for her, Jordin's youth shines.

As for the rest - it's just a matter of time before they're gone.

Chris has no power to his vocals. Phil, though strong this week, has trouble with low notes and should have been voted out weeks ago. And Sanjaya...do I really need to comment? The boy is nothing but hair and teeth.

Kick off who you want tonight. If it were based on vocals, the bottom three would be Lakisha, Sanjaya and Chris. My guess? With all of the support for Sanjaya, nobody is safe.

American Idol - Top 8

Between all of the hype and complaints about Sanjaya and how wonderful Melinda and Lakisha are - though I disagree - I'm getting a little bored with "American Idol" this season.

There was talk on Howard Stern this morning about how this is one of the worst groups of singers yet, and I'm beginning to agree.

It's boring. More on that during my bottom three predictions below.

On to the comments:

Melinda Doolittle - Is this a Latin song? Do-little to make me not so bored, please. And for the love of all creatures great and small will you stop acting so freakin' surprised when someone pays you a compliment?!? Simon said she "looked older" this week. Hey, Simon, where have you been? She sings like she's 60 every week!

Lakisha Jones - I'm still distracted by her lisp. She didn't look comfortable singing this week - it looked tough for her to tone it down.

Chris Richardson - It started flat and kind of stayed that way for the majority. Overall, it was a weak performance.

Haley Scarnato - If your singing sucks, just wear less clothes. That seems to be Haley's philosophy. She was too "Broadway," cheesy and karaoke.

Phil Stacey - He still doesn't do well with low notes. He was better this week, but still finds a weird cartoon-like comical tone that makes me laugh and think, "he can't be serious."

Jordin Sparks - Nothing special, but solid vocals and a fun performance. I'd say the best female tonight and the first good performance of the night.

Blake Lewis - A strong performance vocally - best of the guys.

Sanjaya Malakar - Started out a little off-key, but actually wasn't horrible this week. It kind of fell apart in the middle. One of his better performances, but still not very good.

The bottom three: Here's my thought this week. Blake and Jordin were the only ones that stood out. As for the rest, I'd say you can boot any one of them.

Honda Civic Tour delayed

The first few weeks of the Honda Civic Tour - Fall Out Boy is headlining - have been rescheduled to the end of the tour.

The show in Charlotte will now be on June 13.

The dates were rescheduled due to "personal issues beyond the band's control."

"Just wanted to give everyone a heads up, we are planning on this being the biggest and best Fall Out Boy show that we could possibly have. Unfortunately, because of some personal issues we had to delay the tour a few weeks. We want to put on the best possible show we can and know that this extra couple of weeks will give us the time to put ourselves in the right place to put on the best show we can. The shows from the earlier part of the tour will be rescheduled to the end but all tickets will be honored for all moved shows. Again we apologize. Our fans really mean the world to us and I promise the wait will be well worth it." - Fall Out Boy bass player Pete Wentz.

Refunds for rescheduled shows will be given at the point of purchcase.

Greensboro's live music venue The Flying Anvil has been sold to a group of investors who plan to rename it and turn it into a dance club.

Well, I was pretty sure that Sanjaya would be around another week, but I never thought Gina would go before Phil or Haley...

I'm looking forward to Lakisha and Melinda getting kicked off too, because no one thinks it will happen. Well, if you watched last year, Chris Daughtry found an early exit.

Again, my prediction is a final between Blake and Jordin. So, let's get this thing moving on already.

And what are the guesses - will Sanjaya wear another funky outfit a la Mr. Furley from Three's Company or will he try yet another new hairstyle?

American Idol - Top 9

I think it's great that Tony Bennett was the guest mentor this week, but when he said that Sanjaya is a great singer, I think he lost a little bit of cred.

Here are my thoughts on the top 9 tonight:

Blake Lewis - Plaid pants, blue blazer = bad outfit. His singing was good but it was a little too falsetto-ish for me. He needed a little more edge to the singing.

Phil Stacey - He doesn't do well with low notes. It wasn't too bad, but if it's not Sanjaya, I'd say he's the best bet to go.

Melinda Doolittle - A solid vocal on a good, upbeat song. If she were to win, I see her releasing a soul album - would it do well? I think she's just too boring and "safe" every week.

Chris Richardson - He's not a bad singer and has personality. The problem is that something's missing - He never gives a very memorable performance.

Jordin Sparks - She has strong vocals and is still the best female singer, in my mind. She has fun and is young and hip where LaKisha is blunt and loud and Melinda is boring.

Gina Glocksen - A strong vocal and good song choice. I think the tongue piercing is distracting. No complaints.

Sanjaya Malakar - Pitchy and off-key as usual, plus bad hair and a bad outfit. He had a few good notes, but he's not even in the same league as the other singers.

Haley Scarnato - She continues to show off her legs in short outfits. Broadway Haley was back tonight. It was too "cruise ship."

Lakisha Jones - She needs to soften it up a little. It's too loud and screamy, as usual.

The bottom three: Haley, Phil and, of course, Sanjaya.

American Idol - Top 10

Gwen Stefani is teaching them how to sing? Really? Maybe she could teach them how to yodel, but sing...?

It's funny that No Doubt/Gwen Stefani have sold millions of albums, but it's not good enough to be just their songs this week.

Anyway, here are my thoughts on the top 10 tonight:

Lakisha Jones - Too much vibrato - so much that she's starting to sound like Elmer Fudd at times. She also needs to take it down a notch. Her voice even overpowers the music instead of being a compliment to it.

Chris Sligh - Chris, you're starting to bore me. He sounded a little off-key and off-tempo tonight and I'd say it was one of his worst performances. I agreed with Simon - it didn't feel right and would have been a bad first impression.

Gina Glocksen - A good song choice for her tone. One of her best performances - showed control, range and power in her voice.

Sanjaya Malakar - So, you don't like my voice, but you keep voting for me. Well, how about if I come out looking like a trainwreck? I'll put my hair in a funky faux-hawk...will you still vote for me then? Not only was he off-key as usual, but he also forgot words.

Haley Scarnato - After all the comments on her outfit last week, it's no surprise that she came out in another short skirt. It wasn't as good as last week, but another solid vocal effort. She's lost the Broadway image.

Phil Stacey - The right tone for his voice, but he sounded kind of bored. It wasn't one of his better performances, and there are a few guys better than him. He'll be on his way out soon. He showed that No Doubt is not good for vocals.

Melinda Doolittle - Again, I've had enough of the "Really? I'm good?" look. Get over it. You can sing, but unfortunately, you sing like you're 20 years older than you are. She looked a little more confident when singing, but I'm tired of the act already. I don't picture her as a top-selling Idol.

Blake Lewis - I didn't like a ballad for him, but it showed diversity. It wasn't a memorable out-of-place performance a la "Wonderful World" by Chris Daughtry last season, but it was good to show another side.

Jordin Sparks - Like Sanjaya, she showed that No Doubt is not good for vocals. She showed a fun, young personality, but I didn't like her spin on the song. It was kind of up and down with good and bad moments.

Chris Richardson - I didn't like it. He's too much like Justin Timberlake. Though JT's popularity could help, I think he needs his own personality. It could be his week to go.

The bottom three: Chris, Phil and, of course, Sanjaya.

Weir doesn't disappoint

A packed War Memorial Auditorium helped bring a little flavor of The Grateful Dead to Greensboro on March 24 as Bob Weir and Ratdog performed for more than three hours.

It was a heck of a show highlighted by a number of Dead tunes in the setlist - "Uncle John's Band," "The Golden Road" and "Cassidy" to name a few.

While Weir kept a watchful eye on the teleprompter for lyrics, his guitar playing was as good as always.

Highlights included the second-set-ending "One More Saturday Night" and the encore "U.S. Blues."

It was the last show on the current East Coast tour and Weir went out with a bang.

Pink vs. Furtado

I saw Pink do a performance on the Today show this morning, and it struck me as pretty interesting - Did you ever think about the careers of Pink vs. Nelly Furtado?

Pink started out as this hip-hop/pop star. She decided it wasn't really "her" and changed her whole image for her second album.

With the change, she found more success and popularity and has kept that image - apparently her "true self" - going for years now.

On the other hand, you have Nelly Furtado.

Furtado started out her career as a folk songstress with a few pop sensabilities.

For her third album, she rearranged her career and image into this hip-hop/pop star and has found a bunch of success.

Is this her "true self" or just an image created to sell albums?

American Idol - Top 11

Here are my thoughts on the top 11 tonight:

Haley Scarnato - I thought it was pitchy and a weak performance. A little too "talky" for me instead of singing. It showed a fun side though - better than previous weeks.

Chris Richardson - I wasn't into the falsetto. I think he's a little too much like Justin Timberlake and he needs to find his own identity. The tone also reminded me of Ace Young from last season.

Stephanie Edwards - I thought it was a solid performance, but it always sounds the same. I'd like her to step outside of her comfort zone.

Blake Lewis - He gave the song a modern touch, but left the original intact. I think he provides the most style and character to the competition - he brings something fresh to the table instead of the same old ballads. His style has grown on me and I think he's the best on the competition.

Lakisha Jones - I'm still not impressed. I think she is oversinging at the end of hte song and, like Stephanie, she's always in her comfort zone. People feel the need to vote for her to make up for Jennifer Hudson, but Hudson was also an oversinger.

Phil Stacey - I didn't think his vocals had enough edge tonight. It was just ok.

Jordin Sparks - Solid vocals and personality. To me, she's the strongest female vocalist. She shows control to her voice.

Sanjaya Malakar - The girl crying in the audience was a little too much. I mean, was she crying because it was so bad? I still can't believe he's in the competition. It's really tough to watch.

Gina Glocksen - Not her best performance, but was ok. I thought it was a little shaky.

Chris Sligh - A solid performance, but yet another person who needs to step out of their comfort zone. After five years, I'm getting bored with the same old songs - the ballads all sound alike after a while.

Melinda Doolittle - Out of her comfort zone? How? It was another ballad. She has a powerful voice, but it's boring. She's singing like she's 50 and I'm tired of the "Really? Am I good?" look on her face each week. The spit flying while she was singing wasn't attractive either.

The bottom three: Gina, Phil and, of course, Sanjaya.

Hey Avril, did you know it's your fans that are paying your salary? I'm glad you've come to this realization.

And here's a suggestion - if you don't like playing "Complicated," why not change it up a bit? Create a new version that's fresh for you and for the fans.

Instead of fans hearing it for the 4 millionth time, it'll be new for them too.

Simpson goes pop?
Ashlee Simpson reportedly wants to go 80s on her sophomore album.

She mentioned this to me briefly during my interview with her - simply saying she'd been listening to a lot of 80s music recently.

Apparently, she's going to make like Gwen Stefani and make a tribute to the 80s. Those who read my blog regularly know that I think Stefani's singles have been musical garbage.

As for Simpson - at this point in her career, is there really anywhere to go but up?

Dancing in videos

I was watching MTV this morning and caught the latest Usher video, and suddenly found myself laughing.

Do people really dance like this?

Most of the dancing you see in videos is extremely choreographed. You'd never see someone dancing like this in a club.

In fact, if someone pulled off the NSync "Bye Bye Bye" move of hand-talking, they'd probably live to regret it for the rest of their lives.

So if moves that, in public, would be publicly ridiculed are cool in videos - why are they cool in videos? That is, if anyone actually thinks it's "cool."

Are these hip-hop videos with goofy dancing just there to make us laugh? If so, it seems to be working so far.

Anthrax returns!; Simpson interview

No kidding...

I just got a press release that says it all - Anthrax returns!

"For the first time in 13 years the entire original lineup: Joey Belladonna, Frankie Bello, Charlie Benante, Scott Ian and Danny Spitz, will gather together in one room to discuss new music releases, as well as the future plans for this monumental ANTHRAX reunion."

The band is getting together in New York City on April 1 for a press conference to discuss their future plans. (Almost makes you wonder if it's an April Fool's joke...)

I saw Anthrax once, years ago, on a bill with Primus and Public Enemy - now THAT was a great show.

I'll keep you posted on any other news I hear.

Simpson interview
I had the whopping 10-minute phone interview with Ashlee Simpson yesterday.

I will say she was actually very nice, if a little too "bubbly." And she definitely used the phrase "you know" too much, you know?

She was pretty open in her comments...the first few questions got short answers, but she eventually started rambling.

Overall, it wasn't too bad. I just hate when you get interrupted by the publicist with the words, "Jeff, you have time for one more question."

The story is scheduled to run next week, and I'll post a link here when it does.

Ashlee Simpson and the Crue

Late yesterday, I was offered the opportunity for a 10-minute interview with Ashlee Simpson.

Of course, I had to take it.

Why? Because I want her answer to the lip synch question - not why she did it. My question is - "Do you think the reactions you received were justified? If it wasn't you, but someone else, do you agree that fans should be getting live music?"

I'm still working on the wording, but I'm interested in hearing her answer.

As a huge music fan, and someone who loves writing about it, I'll take the opportunity to interview just about anyone out there. There's always an interesting angle, even if you don't like the band.

Motley Crue
Early word is that I've been given the OK to review Motley Crue's concert for the paper. That's the reward for the day...

Joss replaces Jess

Singer Joss Stone has replaced Sarah Jessica Parker as the new GAP spokesperson.

This is good news to me, because I got tired of hearing SJP sing about how she "enjoys being a girl."

By the way, does anyone actually buy clothes at the GAP anymore? I remember when jeans there were the cheapest around - about $20 a pair. Now, they cost about $50.

Who in their right mind spends more than $30 for jeans? I laugh, in horror, when I hear about women paying more than $100.

But I digress, this isn't a fashion blog.

The reason I bring this up is because I feel like Joss Stone doesn't get enough attention.

If you've heard her performance at this year's Grammy's, or heard either of her albums, you know this girl has talent.

She's often compared to Janis Joplin, but I think it's simply because she's got a great, soulful voice.

Two big new releases for tomorrow that I'm looking forward to:

Ozzy Osbourne's box set and Queens of the Stone Age

I saw Ozzy in concert once, back in 88, I think it was. I remember that the openers were White Lion and Vixen - does it get better than that? haha

Anyway, Ozzy put on a great show, and I still remember parts of it today.

Surprisingly, I don't have one Ozzy album to my name. I used to have some tapes of his when I was going through my "I want to be like Randy Rhodes" phase.

Crazy, but that's how it goes....

I loved the last Queens of the Stone Age album, and may have to go pick this one up. Sure, only one guy is left from the band, or so it seems, but I've heard great things about the new album.

Jimmy Cliff
It was my plan for months to go to last night's Jimmy Cliff concert, but alas, it didn't happen.

Reason 1 - I'm still feeling the pain in my knees and ankles. I'm currently listed as a "medical mystery" by my doctor. They have no idea what's causing it. Personally, I think it could be arthritis, but all tests have been negative.

Reason 2 - I was outside doing yardwork all weekend and was pretty much exhausted by Sunday afternoon. Plus all the work kind of aggravated my knees.

I hope he comes back to the area, because I really would have loved to see him perform.

SXSW; Summer tours

The annual South-By-Southwest Music Festival is going on right now, and as usual, I'm saddened by the fact that I've never been.

I'd love to hear some first-hand comments about it, if anyone's ever been there.

The 80s are back
According to a story over at billboard.com, this summer will see some big tours by bands we thought were left in the 80s - not that it was a bad idea to leave them in the past.

Def Leppard is going to tour minor-league ballparks with Bryan Adams.

The Rock Never Stops tour will feature Cinderella, Ratt, Quiet Riot and Firehouse.

I'm pretty speechless about this second tour - and that's not a good thing.

Do people really want to go see these bands? I understand the appeal of someone like Motley Crue. However, gathering up mediocre talent and combining them on one bill seems like a silly idea to me.

Why pay $40 for one one-hit band, when you can see four in one night?!?

Weekend update

I spoke with Victor Wooten for about 20 minutes yesterday by phone. A great interview that got weird at the end.

Wooten talked about meeting Bootsy Collins, his new album and touring.

At the end of the interview, he said he was going to reveal a "secret" on this tour, and started talking about how he has more than just two arms.

Um.....ok.... I wasn't sure how to respond to that.

No Chevelle for me
Due to a dinner party I have to attend, I won't be going to see Chevelle tonight. Having just saw them in October, I'm not too upset about it.

Cliff on Sunday
I do, however, plan on going to see Jimmy Cliff on Sunday night. Check back Monday for a review.

Ozzfest lineup; New Foos

It's been announced that Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath will be featured on the main stage of this year's 10th Anniversary Ozzfest.

Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and Black Label Society will also be on the main stage while the second stage will be headlined by Rob Zombie.

I'm interested to see if this lineup on the main stage expands. Being the 10th Anniversary, you'd think a "best of" lineup would work for this. Also, I wonder if Ozzy himself is performing, or if he's only doing the Sabbath gig.

Foo Fighters' "Honor"
The Foo Fighters are set to release their fifth studio album, "In Your Honor," in June according to billboard.com.

It's going to be a double disc - one rock and one acoustic. Sounds like a good idea, but we'll have to see how it all plays out.

New Nine Inch Nails

I heard the latest Nine Inch Nails song - the first release from their upcoming new album - on my way home from work Tuesday evening.

As a fan of the band, I'm looking forward to the new release, especially after hearing the new song, "The Hand That Feeds."

It's got a "Head like a Hole" rhythm to it, but it's a bit more melodic during the chorus - instead of screaming.

It's definitely a good sign the album may be their best in a while.

It's driving me crazy - knowing that you want to buy an album, but can only find it as an import for about $30.

Recently, MTV showcased the band "Beatsteaks" on its Advance Warning show. As I watched the band, I realized, "Hey, I saw their video when I was in a hotel in Vienna last year. These guys are pretty cool!"

So I began my search around the net for the album, "Smack Smash," but am having little to no luck.

I contacted the label in hopes of doing a review of the album. No luck.

I looked for someplace to download the album online. No luck.

I looked for a pirated copy for free download. No luck.

On a recent episode of "Viva La Bam," Ryan Dunn and Bam Margera are listening to Beatsteaks in their car.

Why does MTV add to my torture?

Ozzy Osbourne's Box Set includes free ticket
The upcoming Ozzy Osbourne box set, "Prince of Darkness," will include a free general admission ticket to the upcoming Ozzfest tour. It will be a buy one, get one free deal.

Still a pretty cool idea, if you ask me.

The box set is a 52-song, four-CD retrospective.

This makes sense, because they have no suspect.

Jamiroquai can't spell
It's been announced in a press release that Jamiroquai's upcoming album is entitled, "Dynmaite."
It will be released on June 21. Or maybe that should be Juen 21.

Who cares?
In the latest "who cares?" news, Britney Spears says she'll no longer address her personal life in interviews.
This should last until Kevin Federline tries to sell his clothing line or record an album, at which point Britney will shout from the rafters of her trailer park.
If a talentless dancer releases an album to the world, will it make a noise?
I think the answer is no.

Cliff interview update, and a short vacation

After two failed attempts at reaching Jimmy Cliff yesterday, I finally got him on the phone this morning.

Definitely a fun interview that lasted for about 20 minutes or so.

Cliff talked about his music, of course, but I also got him to talk a little about Bob Marley. I didn't go as deep as I would have liked - mostly because the article is about Cliff, not Marley.

A nice guy though, and I was thrilled to hear him say, "I haven't done my best stuff yet."

I loved the last album, and am glad he'll be doing more.

Getting ready for reggae

This afternoon, I'll have the honor of interviewing one of the founders of reggae music, Jimmy Cliff.

His album, "Black Magic," that was released last year was one of my favorites of the year.

It's always interesting when you interview someone who has been in the music business for 40 years - you never know what you'll get, or what questions you should or shouldn't ask.

For example, about four years ago, I interviewed Alice Cooper. His manager told me I'd have 15 minutes and to "stick to the new stuff." Once we got talking, the interview lasted 45 minutes, I asked Alice every question I could possibly think of and he commented that it was a great interview. I got to ask about his appearance on the Muppet Show, his views on the presidential election and more.

In contrast, I interviewed Bo Diddley a few years ago. Here is another musician who's been in the business for years, but you can tell interviews aren't his favorite thing. Some questions Diddley answered for a minute, some questions he gave me one or two words. After about 10 minutes, he simply said, "I need to get going." I had been warned that the interview depended on his mood.

So now, I'm preparing for Jimmy Cliff. Do I ask about his working with Bob Marley? Do I ask about Peter Tosh? Do I get into the thoughts that Marley is more recognized in reggae than Cliff though Cliff was an originator of the reggae sound?

It's a tough line to cross, if you think you're going to ask questions that will stir up emotions.

How do I approach it? I simply wait and judge the mood of the interview. If Cliff is in a good mood and talkative, I'll get into the Marley stuff. If he's short and to the point and seems bothered, you ask about working with Marley, but don't dive deeper.

My job is to gather information, but not offend.

CBGB and DUI

I've never had the chance to visit the legendary CBGB in New York city, but I'd love to have the chance. Unfortunately, that may not happen.

The club is facing closure because of unpaid rent. Open since 1973, The Ramones instantly pop into my head when the name is mentioned.

It's a sad story, and we'll have to watch and see what happens. Apparently, the owner owes $76,000 in rent.

Carter Arrested
What better way to hype your upcoming tour than to get arrested for DUI?
Apparently, Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys thought it was a pretty good idea. Although if my million-making band was relegated to the club scene, I'd be going out and getting drunk too.

Fred Durst sues Internet
OK, maybe he's not suing the whole internet, but he is suing Web sites that posted pictures or video that was hacked from him - I'm sure there's lots of sites out there with it.

I think I may try something new on the weekends. . . unless there's major news.

On Saturday, I'll review a CD.

On Sunday, I'll try and give a look at the week ahead, and down the road.

For example, I still have the new Tori Amos CD to review, as well as others I've mentioned in the past. You can add to that list - the new Black Label Society CD, and Cynder's most recent album.

This week is the Commitments concert, but I'll be on my way to South Carolina for my cousin's wedding when they're in town. So it looks like I won't make it.

On Wednesday afternoon, I'm interviewing Jimmy Cliff. I'm looking forward to that, as his latest album was on my top 10 of last year.

That's a quick rundown - I'm off to watch Viva La Bam.

'Head' speaks

Brian 'Head' Welch has publicly commented on why he left the band Korn, and his new Christian life. It's an interesting article in the way that, while it gives his side of the story, to me it seems like Welch has gone a little overboard as well.

He has changed his title from "founding Korn guitarist" to "former Korn guitarist." Was it such a big deal to be known as a founding member?

His music will be an "extension of the Korn family" but will also have a "Christian, spiritual edge to it."

And what's more Christian than this: "I want to use every dime of the money I make off the songs to build skate parks for kids." Hey, there's nothing better than skating for Jesus, right?

Alanis, Black Crowes and Backstreet

Alanis Morissette is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her "Jagged Little Pill" album - the record that took her from big-haired Canadian pop to the forefront of female angst and man-hating.

She plans on releasing an acoustic version of the album on June 13 - ten years to the day after the original was released. And what better way to celebrate than to release your album to the masses - at Starbucks.

That's right, frappuccino fans. Ms. Morissette's great idea will be corporate-ified by being sold at 4,500 North American overpriced coffee outlets near you.

The acoustic anniversary album is a great idea - one that I wish Pearl Jam would do.

Black Crowes tour
As expected, the Black Crowes are turning their short stint in New York City into a full-fledged tour. I guess Chris Robinson was tired of his wife's success, and his own lack of solo success.

I wish they were coming closer, but maybe I'll make the trek to Raleigh to see them.

I caught the band during a surprise side-stage performance at Lollapalooza in Atlanta years ago, and would love to see them again. They definitely have a great live energy.

Backstreet's been down-sized
You're a boy band that's sold millions of albums. To celebrate your has-been status, you're going back on the road with a new album and a handful of club dates.

Yes, in a smart move - I doubt they'd sell out stadiums - the Backstreet Boys are going on a club tour. I hope these smaller venues are lip-synch equipped.

Touring news

Simple Plan and Good Charlotte are teaming up for the "Green Day Lite Tour." OK, I'm kidding about the name of the tour, but they are teaming up for one. The tour will happen this spring, and thousands of teenagers are bouncing in their seats for it.

Motley Crue is going on a Carnival of Sin later this year, as they announced the addition of a new U.S. tour later this year. I guess the tour is going well, so far, with reports of sellouts or near sellouts in just about every city they're playing.

Alter Bridge - Creed, but without the whine of Scott Stapp - is going to headline the sixth Jaegermeister Music Tour this year. Past headliners have included Slipknot, Saliva and Hatebreed, leaving many music fans wondering, "Huh?"

B.B. King is going to turn 80 this year, and is still touring the country. If that doesn't say something about love for music, I don't know what does.

Nine Inch Nails has announced their tour plans, with briefs runs in the U.S. and Europe. This band disappears for years at a time, and then only announces tour dates in 14 U.S. cities? I hope they add more. . . soon. . . and in North Carolina would be nice too.

Dave Matthews' annual summer pavilion tour will go on as usual, tons of people will buy tickets, the shows will sell out, and if you're lucky, his tour bus won't dump any waste on your head.
